Key fob service is more than replacing the plastic shell. The buttons, battery contacts, circuit board, emergency blade, and vehicle programming all matter. A fob can fail because of a depleted battery, water or impact damage, a broken case, a vehicle battery issue, or lost pairing.
Before replacing the fob
- Try the spare fob if you have one.
- Check whether the vehicle responds when you hold the fob close to the start button or receiver area, if the owner’s manual describes that backup method.
- Notice whether the metal emergency key still unlocks the door.
- Do not throw away a damaged fob until its part number and blade can be checked.
